REVIEW: Drake White – ‘Pieces’ EP

Our favourite foot-stomping troubadour and his guys have left it all on the table with this latest release. My gosh, I’ve been waiting sooooooooo long for this one and cannot take it off repeat. What’s more… I don’t want to!

Banger, after banger, after banger. We are well and truly spoiled with this 5-track taster of what’s to come – hopefully soon!! Hint hint Drake – whenever you’re ready, but like, summer would be incredible for another full album.

So this whole project is my Happy Place – see what I did there?? But, let’s take a little look track by track. There’s just too much gorgeousness not to cover it all…

Girl in Pieces- vocals, drums, tropical vibes… just yes. Opening the project and absolutely killing it. A lovely relaxed track that just brings summer straight out of the speakers.

Not your standard broken hearted, love loss song… okay so she’s broken, but he’s there to show her some love and pick her back up.

‘I see a girl in pieces
Baby let me pick you up
Get you back on your feet
Give you love, love, love

Upbeat, catchy and smooth, just what the doctor ordered for all the ladies that need something more than just cut-throat ballads to get them through.

Grandpa’s Farm – originally from David Nail, is a little dirtier, with a chugging guitar, Drake’s gritty, but velvet-like powerhouse voice and flooded with gospel sounding backing vocals. This isn’t a Drake original, but that doesn’t mean we love it any less… this track is a perfect example of how to cover a song and make it your own, while doing it justice.

Happy Place – WHAT A JAM!

‘You’re my happy place
You’re my saving Grace
You’re like Church on Sunday morning
You’re like lightening without warning’

Light, breezy and calming, this one hits you just right. We all have that one person that we go to whenever we need to feel the sunshine on our faces, and if we don’t, we’re all looking for the one Drake is singing about. I’m not going to over waffle on this one… I don’t need to. It’s just perfect. Go find your happy places people!

Nothing Good Happens After Midnight – Most of the best stuff happens after midnight! Am I right?! Anyone else feeling a little John Mayer meets old-school Maroon 5, with a country twang here? I don’t care, it works and I love it. Drake never loses his authenticity; whatever the man touches turns to gold. Following the Happy Place suit, we have another smooth, relaxing and love-filled track. Not the overly gushy stuff, thank the Lord, but just enough to carry you away with the thought of the sweetheart you keep locked in your thoughts. It leaves me more than ready for some middle of the night lovin’… knickers to Broadway beers.

Aptly closing this record with The Best is Yet to Come – MY FAVOURITE! I honestly cannot get enough of this one. While I promised I’d try not to fangirl over this EP, I’m going to let my gushy bias out right now – not even sorry! Drake you are the best and I know I am not the only one that is waiting (on the edge of my seat, literally) for what is yet to come!

‘Tonight we’re drinking champagne
Out of Dixie cups
Here’s to the wild and free
May we be forever young
Our future looks as bright as
That summer-setting sun
Oh, the best is yet to come

I could never love you more
Than I do tonight
But I know I will tomorrow
When I wake and hold you tight
If anyone has lived the dream
I swear this is the one
Oh, the best is yet to come’

Lyrical perfection and sonically, this song has everything that it needs. Highs and lows, softer verses, building into that beautiful chorus. My only problem with it – It’s not long enough.

Okay, so I’m nearly done with my super emotional enthusiasm for this record, but seriously… the talent that comes from this man on a constant basis is inspiring. Not only in his recorded work, but on stage too. There are very few artists on the country scene that are as real and authentic as Drake. It’s something that we don’t see often enough now and his light shines so bright among the dull norm.

We’ve started the countdown to him returning to our shores this fall… YLIAS has been waiting since he left!
