Country Radio Update (For Chart Dated July 1)

Here’s what’s happening on Country Radio this week, for the chart dated July 1.

Top of the Pile

Dan + Shay – How Not To. Hitting the top after 38 weeks!! The pair helped write two songs on the new Rascal Flatts album, and could have given Gary Le Vox this one to sing. From the Ground Up and Nothin’ Like You have been joined by a third chart-topper. They’ve played the game, hit all the radio stations and smiled their way to the top (more of this later). If there are about 2000 radio stations, there are 40 per state and the successful acts have to be nice to everyone and to every one. The success of Dan and Shay proves that nice guys finish first. Their next single, selected by fans, is the effervescent Road Trippin’.

The Sales Number One

Sam Hunt – Body Like a Back Road. What does he want, a medal?

Edging Closer

Blake Shelton – Every Time I Hear That Song. Up to three and set to challenge for the number 1 next week alongside Florida Georgia Backstreet Boys, the pop-country septet. Some acts shirk the radio and are instead all over primetime TV. He can do better, can Ole Blake, but he’s still gamely showing America what country music is thanks to his all-American performances as a coach on The Voice.

Rising Artists

Carly Pearce – Every Little Thing. At 23 this week, and the subject of an article in the Washington Post about radio tours, ‘the modern-day version of door-to-door sales…There’s no guarantee it will work.’ Carly waits for the program director at one station, who does not meet her due to a busy schedule. Writer Emily Yahr writes that ‘if program directors like you, they could add your music to their stations.’ This will start a chain which leads to number one, which moves to a label being confident in a full album, which moves to a better slot on a tour, then to awards, huge sales and up and up. Rather than hit all 2000 stations (see above), Yahr notes that the acts land on around 172 whose ratings contribute to this here chart. After SiriusXM’s station The Highway stuck Every Little Thing on their playlist, sales soared and Scott Borchetta thought she was worth a punt. 22 places to go and Carly will have a much-deserved number one. If you’re reading in the UK, download or stream it and help bring her over to see Baylen, Bob and of course Dan!

Old Friends

Justin Moore – Somebody Else Will. Sticking at 15, this is getting better with each week, as earworms tend to do. I love the syncopation of the chorus, and the chap can sing. It’s no You Look Like I Need a Drink, but it’s brill all the same.

The Lower Reaches

Aaron Watson – Outta Style. HE STAYS at 32! Elsewhere in the lower rungs of the 40 there’s a new tune from Shania Twain at 36 (more of which in future weeks) and LANCO hitting a high of number 40 itself. Songs by Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney and Eric Church are primed to rise later on in the summer, but Aaron is not going out of style after six whole months on the charts. This is the true Song of the Summer, and it hit 50 in the Hot Country chart for sales, proving he’s more than just an airplay-friendly act. Mazaltov again to our favourite Texan troubadour.
