Country Radio Update: June 15th

Here’s what’s happening on Country Radio this week, for the chart dated June 24.

Top of the Pile

Darius Rucker – If I Told You. He’s ruddy done it!!! After eight hundred weeks on the radio he climbs to one. Good ole Darius, with his speak-singing and chorus full of crotchets. It was great when he performed it at C2C this year, but on radio it sounds stilted, even though he is holding back on purpose. The new album will be full of songs better than If I Told You, but how about a ballad getting to the top of the charts! Where are the guys yelling ‘hey baby!’? It’s a run of ballads at the top: Hurricane, In Case You Didn’t Know, and How Not To is edging closer, as is that Mama song by the seven-piece boyband The Florida Georgia Backstreet Boys.

The sales Number One

Take a guess. He’s at 3 on the radio chart. Even he must be sick of Body Like a Back Road by now…apart from the fact that it’s making him very rich indeed. Fair play to Sam Hunt, and maybe his next single will be a ballad. It won’t be country, that’s for darn sure!!

Edging Closer

Dan + Shay – How Not To. They helped write two songs on the new Rascal Flatts album, and could have given Gary Le Vox this one to sing. It’ll surely top the charts next week, and it deserves to become their third radio number one, after From the Ground Up and Nothin’ Like You. Nice guys, too.

Rising Artists

Adam Craig – Just a Phase. The latest to benefit from a ‘Bobby Bones bump’, which helped Buy Me a Boat break Chris Janson, is Adam Craig, who enters the 40 at 40. The video of Adam ‘avoiding getting song-stumped’, playing whatever Bobby yells at him to play, is evidence of a man whose talent has been rewarded with radio play. He has a very Levoxian voice, but a prettier face, and may well climb up and up with his song Just a Phase. Adam co-wrote the great Close Your Eyes for Parmalee, and this song comes from a five-track EP featuring songs written with Jon Nite, the Warren Brothers, Liz Rose and busbee; Jim Beavers (who writes with Mr Stapleton) was in the room with Adam for this, a song about love and stuff with a great guitar line which will appeal to fans of John Mayer and Ed Sheeran. ‘I’m just a phase you’re going through’ is a proper country lyric, and also a nod to I’m Not In Love by 10cc, a great reference point in 2017!

Old Friends

Dustin Lynch – Small Town Boy. A piece on Farce The Music (written by the same writer of this sentence) tore into this song, and the video promoting it. Judge for yourself, but it’s a very commercial product, a sort of ‘country-to-go’ as opposed to the Cordon Bleu Country of Stapleton an Aaron Watson…Well done to Justin Moore, who is at 15 with Somebody Else Will, whose wife has given birth to their fourth child.

The Lower Reaches

Aaron Watson – Outta Style. HE CLIMBS AGAIN to 32, possibly in light of his gig in Nashville, but elsewhere in the lower rungs of the 40 there are others who played CMA Fest last week. Eric Church is at 33, Morgan Wallen at 35, Brad Paisley at 36 and Chris Janson at 39 with a song about fixing people a drink because he can’t fix the world’s problems. But I bet Aaron can fix them…
