INTERVIEW: Josh Turner On His Upcoming “Mount Rushmore” Album, ‘Country State Of Mind’

Josh Turner joined Dan via Zoom to talk about his upcoming album, ‘Country State Of Mind’, which he describes as his “Mount Rushmore of Country Music”, and features collaborations with Randy Travis, Runaway June, Maddie & Tae and more! (Watch below)

Available on August 21st via MCA Nashville, ‘Country State Of Mind’ features a selection of 12 of Josh’s ultimate favourite country tracks, including five legends who have long held a firm place in his musical journey: Randy Travis, John Anderson, Johnny Cash, Vern Gosdin, and Hank Williams

“It was pretty organic how it came about. My manager and I had talked about doing a record like this; we went to the label and they were excited about the idea. There’s a big variety of songs, and I didn’t just want to entertain my fans with this record, I also wanted to educate them. I could have easily filled this record with the big classics that everyone knows, but what’s the fun in that?”

The album features a number of collaborations with the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Randy Travis and John Anderson, all heroes for Josh, but he also took great pleasure in providing an opportunity for some new-age country artists to be involved:

“For me, when I first got my record deal, I took on that responsibility of being from a traditional world and being expected to create music that gets played on radio. I had to compete, and still maintain that traditional integrity. Artists like Chris Janson, Runaway June and Maddie & Tae are in that same mould, they come from that same perspective. They realise they have to compete and do things to get played on radio, but they come from a traditional background and have a respect, appreciation and knowledge of where country music came from. I felt like they were the most appropriate new artists to tackle these songs.”
