INTERVIEW: Naomi Cooke (Runaway June) On C2C, Album 2, Luke Bryan Tour & Much More!

2019 was a huge year for BBR Music Group trio Runaway June. Their first top 10 single at radio arrived with ‘Buy My Own Drinks’, followed by the release of their critically-acclaimed debut album, ‘Blue Roses’, one of the finest country releases of the year.

They toured with Carrie Underwood throughout the year, an experience which Naomi Cooke says was hugely valuable for developing the trio’s stage craft. “It made us feel like we could play any room. You have to work the entire arena, and once you can entertain at that level and conquer a stage like that, you can project your energy anywhere. We’ve played so many small rooms, too, and connecting with your fans in an intimate space is really different. But we grew as entertainers hugely with Carrie”

They’re gearing up for a return to the UK next month for a main stage performance at C2C Festival, an event that Naomi said was the “highlight of the year” for the trio. “We literally can’t wait to go over. Being on the main stage at The O2 is really exciting and something we’re a little nervous for. We can’t wait to be a part of that festival and sing for our fans in the UK, which sounds surreal to us!”

It’s set to be another big year in terms of touring, as they are due to tour with Luke Bryan on the ‘Proud To Be Right Here’ tour; a huge opportunity for the girls to once again light up arenas and represent the females of country music in the very best way possible. “It’s really important that more guys speak out about the imbalance. I know so many that feel the way Luke does. We’ve had a lot of support; Kip Moore was the first one who took us out, then Jon Pardi, now Luke. And we’re opening for Dan + Shay in month or two. It’s definitely important for the guys to be a part of the conversation.”

The trio have been back in the studio lately, too, thinking about their next step. Whilst ‘Head Over Heels’ is currently being pushed to country radio, album two is already in the works, but still a while away at this point. “We are always writing and always creating. We’re thinking about record number two in 2021, recording things and hearing what’s coming out of us. It’s a little bit of a trial test right now with a lot of music, but you never know – personally, I’d like to have some new music out for the fans by the time we go out with Luke”
