JADE HELLIWELL – ‘TELEPHONE’

Jade performed this song at our recent ‘Nashville Sounds In The Round’ gig in Birmingham, and said that it was her turn to be Christmas #1. If the chart was based upon quality and talent, there would be a very keen contest.

This is a song that will be very dear to those who have suffered with the loss of loved ones in this awful year. The song was written by Jade as a tribute to her Gran, who passed away last year, but it was the passing of her Grandfather in June this year that inspired her to revisit it.

It’s a song that will resonate with many, and also showcases Jade Helliwell’s talent as a songwriter. She gets huge plaudits for her voice, but there are few who match her in the UK as a writer.

ERIC CHURCH – ‘DOING LIFE WITH ME’

Another pre-release from Eric’s forthcoming album, the song features Charlie Worsham on mandolin and electric guitar. It’s cool that the Nashville A-listers are recognising Charlie’s talent.

Eric tells the story of how his nearest and dearest had to put up with his ups and downs on the way to him becoming the megastar he is today. It was written by Church with Casey Beathard and Jeffrey Steele.

The project has been in the can for some time. It was recorded in the mountains of North Carolina before COVID was spreading around the world.

HUDSON MOORE  –  ‘NOTHIN’ LIKE THIS’

We have made a habit of featuring Hudson Moore on our weekly lists. His songs are very easy on the ear with great production and country/soul vibes that are great to add to the playlists.

‘Nothin’ Like This’ is a song written about the excitement he felt whilst driving to meet his girlfriend in Fort Worth, Texas, from his base in Austin. That girl was to become his future wife.

Check out the lush backing and instrumentation. All of the backing instruments were played by Moore himself.

THOMPSON SQUARE – ‘IT’S ALMOST CHRISTMAS’

There has been an abundance of new original Christmas songs released this year, amongst the usual covers of standards that our favourite artists choose to record.

Thompson Square have written and recorded their own cheerful holiday original, and we just had to include it here in our penultimate list before the big day.

It’s their first Christmas song, and features a cute message from son Cooper at the end of the track.

STYLES HAURY – ‘CHRISTMAS ALL ALONE’

Another original Christmas song from a guy who is developing an impressive back catalogue. It’s a track from Styles’ ‘Whiskey Wonderland’ EP.

He’s based in Nashville, has opened for Chris Jansen, Brett Eldredge, Jake Owen and Jordan Davis, and has already recorded a song written by Luke Combs. 2021 might be an interesting year for Styles Haury.

ERNEST – ‘CHEERS’

ERNEST is Ernest Keith Smith. He’s a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who has already written eight chart hits. You will know Morgan Wallen’s ‘More Than My Hometown’, Sam Hunt’s ‘Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90’s’ and Florida Georgia Line’s ‘Dig Your Roots’.

He’s now making his own ascent to the country charts with this pop-country track, written with the FGL guys Brian and Tyler.

He was due to tour this year with Sam Hunt, but the pandemic altered his plans and led to him writing seven of the tracks on the new Morgan Wallen album.

NATE BOTSFORD  – ‘WE NEED ONE ANOTHER’

We featured Nate’s previous single ‘Change Me’ in October and were impressed with the young singer-songwriter who is based in Portland. His new song ‘We Need One Another’ is another that deserves our attention.

“In a world with so much hate and turmoil we need to come together as people, friends and family. We are better together.”

THE LOWDOWN DRIFTERS  – ‘GIVE UP ON THE DREAM’

Featuring Dalton Domino, who shares lead vocals with John Cannon, ‘Give Up On The Dream’ is the Washington-based band’s sixth release of the year.  It relates to a life on the road, driving to gigs where they make little or no money, and sharing queen-sized motel beds with fellow band members to save cash. The dream is to be bigger someday, and this is the incentive to keep going.

The song emphasises the sense of longing, but a determination to keep on going rather than “give up on the dream”.

RANDALL KING – ‘LEANNA’ EP

We first featured Randall King’s music two years ago on our weekly lists. We were raving about his album and were suggesting that he had the potential to become a huge Nashville player.

Warner Music Nashville were the label who signed the Texan to a recording deal, and they are now seeing the fruits of their labours.

The EP, his debut as a major label artist, is named after his late sister who passed this year, and contains four tracks that are collectively amongst the best released this year.

We feature the video to our favourite track ‘Around Forever’ which relates to the assumption that loved ones are always going to be part of your life, and the loss when this fails to materialise.

WILLIE NELSON – ‘COTTAGE FOR SALE’

We finish this week with a pre-release from Willie Nelson’s 11 track album ‘That’s Life’, whcih will be released on February 26th 2021. It’s a covers album that is a tribute to Frank Sinatra, and complements Willie’s 2018 covers album, ‘My Way’.

It was produced by Buddy Cannon and Matt Rollings and recorded in Hollywood, California and Austin, Texas.

‘Cottage For Sale’ has the signature orchestral background that was synonymous with Sinatra’s recordings, and the project will be Willie’s 71st studio album.
