I mean jeeeeeeez, as if This One’s for You wasn’t already amazing enough… how lucky are we to get bonus tracks to boot?! Luke Combs is a one-man powerhouse and you can never get too much of those fantastic vocals. I’m kinda sad it’s not a new album, but hey, new music is new music. That said, I don’t think these gorgeous tracks would have sounded right on another project. They are just sonically perfect to slip on to the North Carolina native’s debut album. Luke is one of those super humble breakthrough acts that you just fall in love with, and these five tracks are more than enough to keep fans holding on to the affair nice and tight.
There aren’t many people that can write about heartache, whether it be broken hearts or missing the one you love, quite like Luke. The man is a lyrical genius who knows exactly how to work with the gifts he has been given. There isn’t a single song that he has released, that sounds like it would have suited someone else more. Houston We Got a Problem is just another showcase of his outstanding talent. He manages to write about his day to day life on tour, missing the one he’s left at home, and still turns it into a ‘real country’ ballad.
Sonically following suit, Must’ve Never Met You sees heartache, reflection and moving on… simple right? Not if you’d met this girl.
What don’t kill ya, makes you stronger, sure sounds like a lie
And whoever said that time heals everything and everything will be alright
Whoever said it aint the end of the world and you’ll find somebody new
Must’ve never met you.
What I love about the production of Luke’s songs is that the guitars never take away from or over-power the vocals. Everything just fits together perfectly. He even changes to some short, almost electro/acoustic verses throughout this track. Love it… love, love, love it.
My favourite of the four, Beautiful Crazy, is just pure, simplistic perfection. Seriously, this song is every female’s dream. Don’t even try and deny it ladies. I for sure know I’d like someone to find all my crazy beautiful!
A Long Way reflects on the simpler times in life, way back when. It took me straight back to the times of rallying on bikes with all our friends, staying out until the milkman gave us a ride home and trying the hundred proof whiskey while our parents were away. Good times, with great friends, in the days that seemed to last forever. This song just makes me smile from ear to ear, with the memories that fill my heart.
I was lucky enough to catch Luke at the C2C shows in both Dublin and Glasgow and see him perform the stunning She Got the Best of Me live… wow. Just wow. Something happens when this man sings, he draws you in with his unassuming and incredibly grateful nature and hooks you with the most heart-wrenching vocals. I would have been more than disappointed had this track not made it onto a recorded project. The perfect song to close out on.
Now, feel free to start working on that new album my man.
