Maren Morris has been quiet for a while now, and with the newly released ‘GIRL’, it is clear why… new music is coming! Whilst being quiet on the music front, she has still made sure the UK are aware of their importance by playing an intimate acoustic show at the stunning Omeara venue and hosting a listening party for a select group of lucky fans. That was when we knew new music wasn’t far off.
GIRL has been released and set tongues a-waggin! The support on social media from other female country artists is monumental; every Instagram or Twitter post has a comment from the likes of Carly Pearce and Kelsea Ballerini . With the stance of females in country music at this present time, Maren releasing this song is so important. The front runners, underdogs, and upcoming female artists of the genre are all working and fighting for exactly the same thing, as a tight knit, supportive group, which in my opinion is how women work best.
Moving back to the actual song, GIRL, Morris is certainly making a huge statement. She is standing tall, in every sense. From the sound of her music moving more onto the Pop/R&B side rather than country (which she has been very open about), to releasing a song simply named GIRL, it’s pretty controversial and extremely brave of Maren to do so. She’s herself, a strong independent woman, and she don’t take no sh*t! This song reassures women that it’s okay to feel down and weak, because at the end of the day you never will be if you continue the fight. Take the pre-chorus lyric “what you feel is natural, you don’t gotta put up with this anymore, pick yourself up off the kitchen floor.” The instrumentation is very empowering and uplifting, with the heavy guitars entangling together, forming a potent and dominating sound which leads the track solidly. The sturdy drums dipping in and out aptly helps the track to build. It all comes together to make this release an almighty anthem!
GIRL, having only being released on 17th January, has already broken records, such as becoming the ‘highest streaming debut by a female artist’ and ‘highest weekly streams by a female artist’. I believe this song, although being released so early in the year, will still be shining at the end. It has come at such an important time, and is literally speaking for itself with what it is doing for Maren. It is provoking conversations that need to be had, beliefs that need to be believed and most of all strength that needs to be felt. Congratulations to Maren Morris and females in country – this song is going to do amazing things.
