SINGLE REVIEW: Old Dominion – ‘No Such Thing As A Broken Heart’

LifeInASong_UK

‘No Such Thing as a Broken Heart’ has gone straight into the Billboard Top Country Songs Chart this week at No.26 and I, for one, cannot wait to see it climb! The song, co-written with Jesse Frasure, is their first release following their debut album ‘Meat and Candy’. This super catchy, cheerful little tune is nothing short of inspirational. While the sound oozes that carefree, spring break pool party vibe, the lyrics depict real relationships today.

Old Dominion have outdone themselves here, because everyone can relate to this song. It’s in touch with reality; it playfully references what happens to relationships after all the hoopla in the beginning and then looks at how ‘real’ couples (like parents) survive afterwards.

‘I wonder if Jack and Diane ever made it
After the drums and the guitars all faded
Was the best they could do good enough
Or did the heartland just swallow ’em up

How did my mom and my dad ever do it
If there were struggles then we never knew it
I guess they had each other and that was enough’

The lyrics are real, positive and yet poignant.  The story coming from the song is that regardless of what is going on in the world around you, what challenges your facing and what could go wrong, embrace it. Take that leap of faith, believe in and inspire others, focusing on the positives in life, when it all seems negative.

‘What am I gonna tell my kids when they see
All of this bullshit that goes down on TV
When the whole world is down on its luck
I gotta make sure they keep that chin up

Cry when it hurts, laugh when it’s funny
Chase after the dream, don’t chase after the money
And know we got each other, that’s what’s up’

The other point I feel comes across, is that we shouldn’t take life too seriously… We can’t control what happens and we’re all just winging it anyway… right? The chorus is my absolute favourite part of the song, it hits that nail right on the head.

‘Cause you can’t keep the ground from shaking, no matter how hard you try
You can’t keep the sunsets from fading, you gotta treat your life like
You’re jumping off a rope swing maybe cause the whole thing is really just a shot in the dark
You gotta love like there’s no such thing as a broken heart’

I honestly can’t wait to see these guys on tour in Europe later in the year! I fell in love with ‘Meat and Candy’ and if the rest of the new album is anything like this song, it will be another smash in my book! They have set the bar really high with this single… Watch this space!
