It appears that the Californian country music scene is starting to produce some serious players.
Will L.A. challenge Nashville? Perhaps not, but in the last few months we have seen the emergence of Sam Outlaw, Cam and now Tyler Rich, a native of Yuba City, who was originally L.A. based honing his craft
It took a move to Nashville however to increase his profile and he set to work writing songs and hitting the circuit. The groundwork paid off.
The result is this 4-track EP that saw the light of day towards the end of 2015 but will be destined for huge exposure in 2016. His first release ‘Radio’ was released back in 2014 and created the initial buzz.
There are certain artists that emerge and you just know that they ‘have it’, whatever ‘it’ is. It happened with Sam Hunt. It happened with Cam and it will happen with Tyler Rich. If the quality of his song writing can be maintained, we are going to be hearing quite a lot of him on country radio.
You could lift any of these 4 tracks and run with them. How can someone write 4 songs that has the listener singing along after a first listen?
You can imagine the reactions of record company execs in Nashville when Mr Rich turned up at their door. ‘Here’s the next Sam Hunt’. Well, maybe not exactly and it’s never that simple, but the similarities are evident.
He has already toured with Sam and also Dan and Shay. Dustin Lynch also saw the potential. Rich has a slot on the ‘One Hell of a Night’ tour with Dustin and fellow newcomer Chris Lane.
The EP opens with ‘California Grown’, a tale of growing up in Northern California and discovering his love for country music. “there’s nothing quite like this place that I call home. I’m California grown”.
The catchy hooks and acoustic backing continues with ‘Turn it Up’ which is probably the best candidate for chart success. The use of electronic beats complementing traditional instrumentation is just perfect for country radio.
The tempo drops a notch for ‘Brothers’ before we end the new material with ‘I Can Teach Ya’, another catchy track which is tailor-made for country radio.
It’s not easy to choose a favourite on this one. The material is strong throughout. If he can replicate this quality with a full album we will have a serious player in the world of country music here.
This is one of the best samplers I have heard for some time. I look forward to hearing the album when it’s released shortly. It’s destined to be a big hit.
